American Water Launches Nationwide Celebration of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Safe Drinking Water Act’s 50th Anniversary
CAMDEN, N.J. – OCTOBER 28, 2024 – American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., announced today that it will launch a nationwide celebration recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), a law passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s public drinking water supply, through 50 days of highlights starting today through December 16, 2024.
"Reflecting on 50 years of the Safe Drinking Water Act, we are reminded of the profound impact it has had on the nation's public drinking water supply,” said Lynda DiMenna, Vice President and Chief Environmental Officer, American Water. “At American Water, we are proud to advocate and advance the legacy of this vital legislation, while we continue to deliver safe, clean, reliable and affordable water to the communities we serve nationwide.”
American Water recognizes the SDWA's 50-year impact on water quality and emphasizes the need for continued investment to address emerging challenges in water safety and quality. The company expects to invest $34 to $38 billion in infrastructure repairs and replacement, and system resiliency over the next 10 years.
