Water Main Replacement Completed Near Downtown Belleville Fountain

Temporary Road Closures, Traffic Reroute Downtown Will End & Return to Normal By End of Day Friday (Aug. 25)

BELLEVILLE (Aug. 25) – Illinois American Water has completed the installation of new water mains under the fountain/square in downtown Belleville. As a result, temporary road closures, fencing, roadblocks and traffic rerouting near the fountain will end by the end of day, Friday, August 25.

The project started June 5 and had a goal to be completed by Labor Day. Loellke Plumbing was general contractor of the project. The Lochmueller Group was the engineering design group for the project. Illinois American Water worked closely with the City of Belleville, St. Clair County, and Illinois Department of Transportation to plan, start and complete the project.

Illinois American Water coordinated the timing of the project with the City of Belleville to avoid conflict with the schedule of community events downtown. The City of Belleville, IDOT, St. Clair County and Belleville Chamber of Commerce worked with Illinois American Water to minimize traffic inconvenience and minimize disruption to local businesses.

The project included replacing 1,700 feet of aging water main with new 12-inch ductile iron pipe. The location of the water main replacement project is in the vicinity of the Belleville Fountain/Square from:

  • Illinois Route 159 (South/North Illinois) from A Street to Washington Street.
  • (West/East) Main Street from First Street to High Street.

The water lines replaced were approximately 75 years old. The original line was installed in 1949 with additions in 1955.

“We appreciate the community’s cooperation and collaboration, especially the businesses in downtown Belleville,” said Jeff King, Engineering Manager for Illinois American Water. “We recognized this was a temporary inconvenience and disruption but it was essential that this water main be replaced.” King added that the project has been completed without contractor, employee or public safety incidents. The safety of workers and the public was top priority of the project, he said.
