Indiana American Water Issues Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Certain West Lafayette District Customers
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (January 19, 2020) Indiana American Water has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for certain customers in its West Lafayette, Ind. service area after a loss of pressure in in a portion of the water distribution system. Additional details and a map of the affected area are available online at indianaamwater.com/alerts. The drop in pressure was caused by equipment malfunction at a tank site on Sunday, January 19, 2020. The equipment has been repaired and pressures have returned to normal in the area.
Customers in the affected area are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for approximately three minutes. Tap water can be used for washing/bathing.
Affected customers in West Lafayette are being notified about the system pressure drop and boil water advisory through the company’s CodeRED emergency notification tool. The boil water advisory will be in effect for approximately 24 hours and customers will be notified when the advisory has been lifted. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch (psi) in any part of a distribution system. According to company officials, boil advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer's best interests in mind. It's possible, but unlikely, bacteria could enter the water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.
During the boil water advisory, the water company performs a series of tests to determine if the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. Any additional information regarding this boil advisory will be shared with residents through local media outlets and the company’s CodeRED emergency alerts service.
