Indiana American Water to Partner with Emergency Professionals on Safeguarding Water Resources

Muncie, Ind. (October 22, 2024) - Indiana American Water will be hosting City of Muncie, Delaware County, and other area emergency response professionals to its distribution offices on Burlington Drive for a hands-on demonstration on how to contain contaminants that may enter our waterways. Residents should not be concerned – it is a training initiative that simulates a real-world containment drill utilizing specialized “boom deployment” containment equipment.

Boom deployment training teaches people how to use spill containment booms, including how to arrange them, handle the equipment, and respond to real-world spill scenarios. This type of training is important because it helps prepare responders for actual spill events while building confidence.

Boom deployment involves placing a boom in a moving body of water to contain a spill and can be used to:

  • Stretch across a waterway to contain a spill
  • Encircle floating oil so it can be recovered
  • Deflect oil or other contaminants away from sensitive location

“Protecting our rivers, reservoirs, lakes and watersheds is crucial for ensuring clean and safe drinking water for our community. These natural resources act as vital filters and reservoirs, supporting both human health and the environment, said Chris Daniel, Indiana American Water’s Supervisor of Water Quality and Environmental Compliance. “By safeguarding them from unexpected spills, we are protecting our community from potential disruptions in their water supplies.”

The training will take place on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, between 10:00 a.m. and noon (ET).

Representatives from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will be on hand, working with Delaware County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Local Emergency Planning Committees and Hazmat professionals within Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Muncie Fire Department in this joint effort to protect water resources.
