Kentucky American Water Supports Lexington’s Town Branch Park through $100,000 Gift
The city of Lexington’s original source of drinking water inspires new park in the heart of downtown
Kentucky American Water is pleased to announce the company’s support of Town Branch Park in downtown Lexington through a gift of $100,000. The Town Branch of Elkhorn Creek – the city of Lexington’s original source of drinking water – is the inspiration for the new park, which promises to be a transformational gathering and entertainment space for Central Kentucky residents and visitors alike.
“Kentucky American Water is pleased to support this effort to bring back the spirit of Town Branch through this reimagined space that will be accessible to all,” said Kathryn Nash, president of Kentucky American Water. “We recognize the value Town Branch Park will add to the community and region — to include providing additional opportunities for water-based play — and we look forward to its debut in 2025.”
The public park will include a large permanent stage and performance lawn, children’s play areas, water features, dog park, and art installations as well as an actual emergence of Town Branch flowing through the space. The highly programmed green space adjacent to the new Central Bank Center and Rupp Arena also will serve as a trailhead for the downtown trail system, including connections to Town Branch Trail and Legacy Trail.
“Water will play an important role in the park – from entertainment to education to environmental benefits,” said Allison Lankford, executive director of Town Branch Park. “By peeling away layers of concrete and blacktop, Town Branch Park will expose and restore the stream bed and a piece of our history, making it the centerpiece of the park. Visitors will be able to view and appreciate a more ecologically productive waterway with thriving species of plants, insects, birds, and more. We greatly appreciate Kentucky American Water’s investment in this treasure for the community.”
