New York American Water Launches Spring Flushing Program
Merrick, NY (March 25, 2021)—As part of its routine maintenance program, New York American Water (NYAW) will begin flushing of water mains throughout its service territory on April 5, 2021, to deliver high-quality water service to its customers. Water main flushing clears harmless mineral deposits and sediment that may have built up over time inside the pipes. The process also includes flushing fire hydrants to make sure they are operational and to check flows in the system.
“Water main flushing is a necessary part of maintaining and improving water quality by removing mineral and sediment buildup that can occur over periods of time,” said NYAW Vice President of Operations Jim Runzer. “Customers may experience low pressure or water discoloration during flushing in their neighborhood. If discoloration occurs, customers should run their cold water from the lowest point in their home until it runs clear.”
Water main flushing will occur between Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the following areas on the following dates:

- Make note on your calendar of your community’s scheduled flushing times.
- Check for discolored water prior to using a washing machine or a dishwasher.
- If laundry does become stained, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy duty detergent and add a rust remover.
- Draw water needed for cooking ahead of time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.
- If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.
