New York American Water Names Winners of Annual Art Contest

Three Local Fifth Grade Students Honored with First, Second and Third Place Recognition for Water Conservation Artwork

MERRICK, N.Y. (January 20, 2021)—New York American Water (NYAW) is proud to announce the winners of its 2020 “Be Water Wise!” art contest for local fifth grade students within their service territory. Given the COVID-19 public health emergency, NYAW transitioned this contest to a virtual contest that provided students with an opportunity to learn about the importance of water conservation and express their creativity.

“We were excited to be able to execute our art contest this year and see the wonderful submissions that demonstrate the creativity of these students, as well as their impressive knowledge of the importance of water conservation,” said Lee Mueller, external affairs manager of New York American Water. “We commend everyone who participated in the contest this year as 2020 presented unprecedented challenges for these students. The future of water conservation looks very bright in the hands of these young stewards of our most precious natural resource.”

This year’s contest winners are: First Place - Christos Perlegis from Seaford Manor Elementary; Second Place - Olivia Reber from Forest Lake Elementary; and Third Place - Jaelene Munoz from Seaford Manor Elementary. Winners of the contest were selected based on their submissions’ overall artistic design and creativity, as well as their written summary demonstrating their understanding of water conservation. Each winner will receive an American Express gift card and all contest participants will receive a certificate of participation and a reusable water bottle.
