New York American Water to Conduct Annual Flushing of Water Mains and Hydrants Starting April 20, 2020
Company postponed Glen Head and North Merrick flushing originally scheduled for March 30
MERRICK, N.Y. (March 27, 2020) – New York American Water will begin flushing its water distribution system on Monday, April 20, 2020, as part of its commitment to ensuring reliable, quality water service for its customers. Flushing is an essential part of the company’s system maintenance program and is unrelated to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
New York American Water postponed the start of flushing in Glen Head and North Merrick until April 20, instead of March 30, to better align with the rest of the company’s flushing schedule. The updated schedule is available at www.nyamwater.com, under Alerts or click here.
Flushing clears mineral deposits and sediment that may have built up over time inside the pipes. It is important to complete this maintenance in advance of the high-demand period of summer. Flushing also allows the company to check fire hydrants to make sure they are operational and to check flow rate in the system.
“Flushing is a critical part of our annual maintenance to ensure water quality and to provide us with the opportunity to check water flow throughout our system. Now, more than ever, it is important that we maintain our regular maintenance programs, so we can continue to deliver this essential resource to our customers,” said New York American Water Vice President of Operations, Jim Runzer. “We understand that many of our customers may be home during this year’s flushing program, and we will be communicating with customers in advance of flushing in their area through our CodeRed customer notification system and Facebook page.”
New York American Water will be flushing the system throughout its Long Island service areas according to the following schedule.

When the system is being flushed, customers may notice a drop in water pressure or experience discolored water. This is a normal part of the process. New York American Water advises customers to let their cold water run until it is clear.
New York American Water offers its customer the following additional tips:
- Mark your calendar to be prepared when the company begins flushing the water mains in your neighborhood.
- Draw water for cooking ahead of time and store a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking.
- Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap before doing laundry or running the dishwasher.
- If laundry becomes stained, do not put your laundry in the dryer. Rewash clothes immediately using a heavy-duty detergent and add a rust remover. Most rust removers can be used on stained fixtures.
- In some cases, slight discoloration may linger in the water for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance and does not affect the water quality.
- If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been complete, check faucet screens for trapped particles.
