Pennsylvania American Water Announces $6 million Water Line Replacement Project in Scranton
Section of Lake Scranton Walking Path to Temporarily Close
SCRANTON, Pa. (November 2, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced a $6 million water line replacement project in the city of Scranton. The project, which begins Monday, November 6, involves replacing more than 1,700 feet of 12-inch water main along a portion of the Lake Scranton walking path. The existing pipe dates back to the early 1900s.
The work is part of a three-year project to replace more than 8,000 feet of water main along portions of Snook Street and Elmhurst Boulevard in the East Mountain section of Scranton.
“This section of the project includes replacing pipe that was placed near Lake Scranton before the walking path existed,” said Dan Rickard, senior manager, operations, Pennsylvania American Water. “The pipe connects a water line along Snook Street to the storage tank located along Lake Scranton Road. The new pipe will be located closer to the walking path, which will be repaved once this portion of the project is complete.”
Due to the project and the location of the new water line, part of the walking path around the Lake Scranton reservoir will temporarily close to pedestrian traffic beginning Monday, November 6. The walking path will be closed from the overlook by the traffic light at Route 307 going south to the walking path access from Lakeview Drive. Handicap parking in both locations will remain open during the construction. Work is expected to last until early December.
During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.
