Pennsylvania American Water Breaks Ground on Washington County Water Service Extension Project

McMurray, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water and local officials participated today in a groundbreaking event to kick off the company's approximately $21 million investment to install more than 10 miles of water mains to extend public water service to portions of Washington County.

“This investment will provide high quality, reliable, and affordable water service and fire protection to the Avella School District and surrounding communities,” said Justin Ladner, President of Pennsylvania American Water. “Since 2007, we've extended over 60 miles of water mains in Washington County, bringing public drinking water to more than 800 customers.”

The project will connect the Avella School District to the company's Washington County service area through Cross Creek, Independence, and Mount Pleasant Townships and communities along Old Steubenville Pike and Campbell and Donaldson Roads. Construction will begin in early November and is expected to be completed by Spring 2025.

“Pennsylvania American Water's dedication to Washington County deserves recognition,” said Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi. “This project will play a significant role in enhancing the quality of life for these communities and the development of Washington County.”

Area residents and businesses currently depend on unreliable private wells, springs, and cisterns for their water needs.

“This project marks a significant milestone for our community,” said Cross Creek Township Supervisor Evan Midler. “This effort demonstrates Pennsylvania American Water's dedication to collaborating with Cross Creek Township to improve the well-being of our residents and students.”

The Avella Area School District relies on a groundwater well for its water needs, including drinking and cafeteria usage. It also must rely on the use of pumper trucks by the local fire department.

“Public water service brings safety and peace of mind to our school district,” said Avella Area School District Superintendent Cyril Walther. “Having access to public water will prepare us better for emergencies.”

Infrastructure projects like this one are an essential investment in public health and safety and help support the economic health of the communities served by Pennsylvania American Water. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.

Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $490 million in 2022 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,000 jobs through these continued investments.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and wastewater services to approximately 2.3 million people.
