American Water Launches Nationwide Celebrations of the Safe Drinking Water Act’s 50th Anniversary
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Oct. 28, 2024) – American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., and its subsidiary West Virginia American Water, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), a law passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s public drinking water supply. The company will be celebrating through 50 days of highlights starting today through December 16.
“The Safe Drinking Water Act forever changed the trajectory of drinking water in our nation,” said Robert Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “We’re proud to provide drinking water that meets and often surpasses state and federal drinking water standards to more than one-third of West Virginians.”
The SDWA set strong water quality standards to protect U.S. public health. West Virginia American Water recognizes the SDWA's 50-year impact on water quality and emphasizes the need for continued investment to address emerging challenges in water safety and quality. The company expects to invest approximately $100 million annually in infrastructure repairs and replacement, and system resiliency in the great state of West Virginia.
