Local Students Score Top Prizes in West Virginia American Water’s “Protect Our Watersheds” Art Contest
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (April 27, 2023) – Two fifth-grade students from Kanawha County, West Virginia, have taken the top two prizes in the eighth annual Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest organized by West Virginia American Water. The competition aims to educate the state's young generation on the significance of protecting watershed health, water conservation, and source water protection through interactive art projects in classrooms.
Bianca Holcomb, an Elk Elementary School student, was awarded one of the top prizes for her artwork showcasing a litter-free planet with West Virginia wildlife, emphasizing the importance of conservation and protection for a greener tomorrow.
“Water conservation and clean drinking water is important because it has a big impact on our planet,” said Holcomb. “I believe if we all do our part, we will make the world a better place.”
Alicen Jones, a Clendenin Elementary School student, also won the top prize with her artwork featuring a West Virginia Brook Trout swimming in clean water, while promoting various eco-friendly practices like recycling, picking up litter, and pet waste disposal.
“I believe West Virginians should protect our watersheds because without clean water there is not life,” said Jones. “I centered my artwork around the West Virginia Brook Trout because it’s our state fish and I thought our people could relate to it more and step up to do their part.”
Bianca and Alicen will both receive a $50 bookstore gift card, while their entire class will be awarded a pizza party and a $50 gift card for their teacher to purchase classroom supplies.
