West Virginia American Water Announces 9th Annual Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Mar. 1, 2024) – West Virginia American Water announced today entries are being accepted for its ninth annual Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest. Students in third, fourth and fifth grades located in areas served by West Virginia American Water are eligible to enter.
“Empowering West Virginia's youth through education on the vital connection between clean water, environmental stewardship and their own well-being remains a key focus of our annual community engagement initiatives,” said Rob Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “This unique contest allows students the opportunity to channel their artistic abilities while fostering new ideas for ways to preserve and protect our shared water resources.”
West Virginia American Water encourages teachers and parents to promote the contest as a fun and imaginative way to draw students’ attention to protecting and preserving West Virginia’s watersheds and drinking water sources. Winners will be selected based on creative vision, artistic talent, understanding of watershed protection and the ability to communicate that understanding. As part of their entry, students must write a brief narrative on the personal impact of watershed protection.
Two winners will be selected across West Virginia American Water’s service areas. Each winner will receive a $50 bookstore gift card. Additionally, the winners’ classes will receive a pizza party with the company’s mascot, Puddles, and a $50 gift card for each winner’s teacher to purchase classroom supplies.
The 2023 Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest winners were Bianca Holcomb, an Elk Elementary School student, and Alicen Jones, a Clendenin Elementary School student.
Guidelines and entry forms can be found on the “Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest” page of the company’s website (LINK TO WEBPAGE). The deadline for artwork submissions is Friday, April 5, 2024, and winners will be announced during Earth Week.
