West Virginia American Water Announces Significant Infrastructure Investment in South Charleston
Charleston, W.Va., (Aug. 22, 2024) – West Virginia American Water announced today an infrastructure initiative to replace approximately 1,200 feet of water main in South Charleston. The company will invest more than $435,000 in system improvements in the city
“West Virginia American Water continues to make significant investments in the water distribution system in South Charleston which improves the quality and reliability of drinking water and fire service,” said South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens. “The improvements are necessary and will upgrade the system for many years to come.”
This project, which started August 6, includes replacing the aging 6-inch and 2-inch water main with new PVC pipe. Construction will take place along Windham Road from the Windermere Pool to the end of the cul-de-sac. These upgrades will help improve water service reliability and increase water flows for household use and firefighting.
Crews will work Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the water main installation, connect all customer service lines to the new main and finish street restoration and paving by the end of October.
These infrastructure upgrade projects are an important investment in public health and safety, and they also help support the economic health of the communities served by West Virginia American Water. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout local economies.
Over the past decade, West Virginia American Water has invested over $736 million, in infrastructure projects and capital upgrades to address aging infrastructure across the Mountain State, including more than 168 miles of new water main. During construction, customers may experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. To report water related emergencies such as leaks, main breaks or other service disruptions, customers can submit a service request on the company’s website.
