West Virginia American Water Reiterates No Drinking Water Advisories for Huntington Customers Following Ohio Train Derailment
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Feb. 14, 2023) – West Virginia American Water continues to monitor water quality along the Ohio River following the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. The health and safety of our customers is a priority, and there are currently no drinking water advisories in place for Huntington customers. As of noon on February 14, source water monitoring and water quality testing have not detected any change to raw water at the company’s Ohio River intake, though as a precautionary measure, the company has enhanced its treatment processes. West Virginia American Water utilizes the Ohio River as a drinking water source for its Huntington system only. No other West Virginia American Water systems are facing potential impacts as a result of this event, including the Kanawha Valley system in Charleston.
West Virginia American Water has completed installation of a 3,700-foot, 24” water line connecting to a temporary secondary intake on the Guyandotte River. Today, the company began testing and operating the water line from the Guyandotte River to its Huntington Water Treatment Plant. Additionally, the company has completed initial water quality testing of the Guyandotte River, which indicates that the temporary source meets all state and federal guidelines for drinking water sources.
As a safety precaution, the public is asked to continue avoiding the Guyandotte River access point and boat ramp near 3rd Ave., as this is an active staging area for West Virginia American Water construction crews and will be temporarily closed from time to time.
