DETECTING LEAKS
Even the smallest leak in your water system can cause the loss of thousands of gallons of water each month. That loss means not only is water being wasted, but also that you will probably receive an unnecessarily higher water bill.
The faster you can identify the source of a leak, the faster it can be fixed. If you suspect you might have a leak, our helpful and easy-to-follow leak detection kit can help you find it. We are all responsible for helping to save and conserve water, and we want to help you save water and money.
Quick Test: Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.

Toliet Leaks
According to US EPA Water Sense, toilets are by far the main source of water use in the home, accounting for nearly 30 percent of an average home's indoor water consumption. Older, inefficient toilets that use as much as 6 gallons per flush also happen to be a major source of wasted water in many homes.
You can identify toilet leaks but utilizing a leak detection kit linked above. By using food coloring, you can place a drop in the toilet tank and wait 10 minutes. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak. Be sure to flush immediately after the experiment to avoid staining the tank. New Jersey American Water's Leak Detection Program
We are committed to finding and fixing leaks quickly and efficiently using innovative leak detection technology and practices. Even the smallest leak in a water system can cause the loss of thousands of gallons of water loss. Once a leak is detected, New Jersey American Water will either repair or replace water pipelines that have reached the end of their useful life.
Addressing leaks faster saves water, and potentially reduces customer impacts and prevents leaks from becoming major main breaks or extended service disruptions. On the flip side, allowing subsurface leaks to go unaddressed can result in significant damage.
Since 2016, our operations and engineering teams have been using EchoShoreDX®, an acoustic monitoring technology from Echologics. This acoustic technology allows our team to locate subsurface leaks with exceptional accuracy, BEFORE they bubble to the surface.
