LOBBYING EXPENDITURES
American Water believes interacting and engaging with government officials, legislators, regulators, executive branch officials, and members of their staff, as well as with others who engage in the public policy arena, is an important and necessary part of our mission to provide safe, clean and affordable water and wastewater services to our customers. We undertake these engagements responsibly and in a manner that complies with applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations.
In 2020, American Water and its subsidiaries reported to various Federal and state election commissions aggregate lobbying expenditures of approximately $1.3 million in connection with activities defined under Federal law or the laws of each such state as reportable lobbying activities. The amount above includes all expenditures during periods of time required to be reported during 2020, which may include periods other than the 2020 fiscal or calendar year period.
This disclosure has been reviewed and approved by the Company’s Board of Directors, upon the review and recommendation of the Nominating/Corporate Governance Committee, which is comprised solely of independent members of the Board of Directors.
